Billions of dollars later, Elon Musk is ready to launch the first privately owned manned spacecraft. Why Elon Musk makes history, explained.

WHY ELON MUSK MAKES HISTORY.

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, is about to send humans into space. The billionaire’s rocket ship company SpaceX is scheduled to launch its first manned spaceflight on May 27th. If all goes as planned, Crew Dragon Demo-2 will be the first time humans have taken off for space from American soil since the NASA Space Shuttle program’s final mission in 2011. It will also be the first manned spaceflight from a private company, ever.

THE STAKES ARE HIGH.

A successful mission may begin a new era of space exploration, taking it out of the hands of governments and the public sector and into the hands of private businesses. If Demo-2 fails, it could be a long time before manned spaceflights return to the United States.

WHERE ARE THE ASTRONAUTS GOING?

To the International Space Station (ISS). They will stay there for 1 to 4 months.

WHAT IS THE ISS?

  • The ISS programme is a multi-national collaborative project between five participating space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).
  • The station is suited for testing the spacecraft systems and equipment required for possible future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
  • The ISS is the most expensive man-made object is the International Space Station (ISS). Its final cost will be over $100 billion. It is also the largest artificial object in space.

A foreward view of the International Space Station backdropped by the limb of the Earth. In view are the station's four large, maroon-coloured solar array wings, two on either side of the station, mounted to a central truss structure. Further along the truss are six large, white radiators, three next to each pair of arrays. In between the solar arrays and radiators is a cluster of pressurised modules arranged in an elongated T shape, also attached to the truss. A set of blue solar arrays are mounted to the module at the aft end of the cluster.
